Yoni is Sanskrit for "womb" or "vagina."

This ancient terminology has come back in vogue in recent years. From yoni eggs to steams to mapping, all it really comes down to is an appreciation for our sacred femininity. Let's break down some details from both a medical and spiritual perspective.

Rituals

There are several rituals surrounding the Yoni, and in modern marketing times, said rituals are labeled with Yoni being a buzzword. Still, they also require a better clinical explanation to ensure safety and whether or not they could actually prove effective.

Yoni Eggs

The first Yoni product to become popularized in recent years, a Yoni Egg is literally a crystal shaped like an egg, with an attached string inserted inside you like a tampon.

Since they are crystals, each holds a significant meaning. There is rose quartz to amplify love, jade to bring prosperity and known to be good for fertility. According to Taoism, jade correlates with the sacred feminine energy. There are also black obsidian yoni eggs that help heal your root chakra, where traumas can be stored, and when in balance, it provides us with a sense of security.

Spiritually, there is great significance, and yoni eggs have been used for many eras. However, clinically, there are many cautions to consider. Again, much like a tampon or other items inserted vaginally, you want to ensure the utmost safety. There is potential for irritation, and you would want to clean the egg with a gentle cleaning agent regularly. Also, consider the length of time the egg is inside you, whether overnight or during your daily activities. A yoni egg does take getting used to and can cause cramping in your lower stomach region. Lastly, doctors state there are no medical benefits to using a yoni egg.

However, with these details provided, there is the primary selling point for a yoni egg, should you wish to connect to your sacred femininity in this manner. The eggs can promote "involuntary Kegels" because your body is naturally tensing here to hold the egg. It can strengthen your pelvic floor, which is of the utmost importance throughout a woman's lifetime.

A more robust pelvic floor can improve your orgasms, reduce uterine prolapse and incontinence issues, and strengthen your vaginal walls after childbirth. So though a yoni egg is not medically recommended, with a focus on the proper methodology, it could help with kegels and does hold spiritual significance.

Yoni Steaming

If you steam your face to open and purify your pores or sauna, Yoni (or vaginal) steaming is not so far-fetched of a concept. The methodology would be to add herbs of your choice to a basin of hot water. After allowing the herbs to steep (like tea,) stand or squat over the basin (unclothed, with a towel to keep the steam enclosed) and relax in this position for about 20 - 60 minutes.

Much like all differences between western and eastern (and other global and ancient) medical practices, the need for tangibility to be seen quickly causes the lack of validity with herbal remedies. Vaginal steaming is a self-care practice, and again, much like steaming other parts of your body, you are promoting a sense of well-being when done correctly.

Common herbs used: mugwort, wormwood, chamomile, calendula, basil, oregano, red raspberry, rose.

Yoni Mapping

A massage for your pelvic region, simply put, is Yoni Mapping. In regards to reclaiming the power of the feminine, this process promotes self-exploration, and it is also taught and used as therapy by practitioners.

Everything is energy, and our bodies, particularly our pelvic region, can hold emotional and physical traumas. Our reproductive systems are magical as they go through menstruation, childbirth and menopause. Through years of experience (and the global mistreatment of the female reproductive system,) our Yoni, this sacred place, has been through a lot. So to massage this area and particularly connect it with therapeutic practices for mental and emotional release.

Medically, again, it's not entirely proven; however, just as you would go to a massage therapist for other parts of your body to improve, Yoni Mapping is just as beneficial.
